For those who like the idea of creating their own TiVo-like box using solutions like Windows Media Center or MythTV, there's another option now available. ReplayTV, TiVo's main competitor in the late 1990s, has released the PC Edition of ReplayTV.
A combination of software and service, ReplayTV PC Edition, allows you to record programs over the air, directly from cable or by controlling a cable set-top box. ReplayTV PC Edition seems to have a decent set of control features including bypass-that-pesky-commercial-30-second-skip, a variety of search features, customizable TV guide, and a surprise me feature. Unfortunately, ReplayTV currently only supports four Hauppauge tuner card models – only one model can control a cable box. It also currently doesn't support dual tuner cards, ATSC or QAM HDTV signals or CableCARDs. Welcome back to 1999. If they don't make some serious additions in the next release, they'll be left in the dust with the upcoming release of Vista's media center. The software is $99.95 including one year of service. Additional years of service are $19.95 each. 30-day trials are available. Link
