Niveus Customers Get CableCARD Upgrade Path PDF Print E-mail

In a wise move, Uber-Media Center PC maker Niveus is giving its customers an upgrade path to Windows Vista with CableCARD capability.

TechDigs.net contacted Niveus to get the specifics on the upgrade.

The upgrade applies to all 2006 and 2007 products. According to Niveus, they're still determining eligibility for 2005 products, and pricing has not been determined.

The upgrade includes a professionally-installed new version of Windows Vista, an external USB Niveus CableCARD adapter and all the changes necessary to meet the CableLABS Certification Standard. Depending on the model being upgraded, some customers may also need to upgrade other hardware such as the video card and/or motherboard. We know CableLabs is pretty tough, so clearly obvious DRM standards like HDCP output for DVI/HDMI will be a required.

Niveus is clearly a very high-end product, so it makes sense for them to offer this level of upgrade for their customers.

If you're not a Niveus customer, what's interesting about this is the external USB CableCARD device and the fact that CableCARD upgrades are a possibility. While we think it would be wise for other Media Center PC manufacturers to do the same, we're doubtful they will.
