Consumer electronics leaders Samsung, LG, Panasonic, NEC, Sony and Toshiba with startup SIBEAM today announced the formation of a special interest group called WirelessHD to develop a specification for a wireless high-definition digital interface. WirelessHD™ or WiHD™, is intended to eliminate HD video/audio cables such as HDMI and DVI between consumer electronic devices.
If they can get wireless video and audio distrubtion to work easily and as well as wires, it will have a major impact on how we use our gear as well as the kind of gear we use. Projectors, flat panels, etc., would really benefit from cutting the cord.
There are competing products such as the Tzero's wireless HDMI announced inside the Gefen Wireless HDMI extender. But with the backing of these industry leaders, WiHD definitely has a head of steam. Now we wait and hope that we end up with a common standard like HDMI and not a fight that hurts consumers like HD-DVD and Blu-ray.
