Click to enlarge Royal Philips Electronics has announced an updated Pronto remote control -- the Pronto TSU9600. This new Pronto breaks from other Philips hand-holdable versions with its landscape orientation. A similar form-factor to the new Logitech Harmony 1000, it really feels nice in your hand. The TSU9600's improved 3.7" VGA (640x480) screen exhibits minimal aliasing and is very crisp. It includes WiFi remote extension capability in addition to standard infrared. Designed as a stand-alone remote, the TSU9600 will co-exist with other TSU9600s on the WiFi network, but the remotes won't interact. Unfortunately, other than Lutron RadioRA, the TSU9600 doesn't work with standards such as Z-Wave or Zigbee -- so no controlling that fireplace or toaster from the Pronto. Additionally, this Pronto works with the Escient® Fireball™ Media Manager and also can control other devices on the home network using WiFi. While the customization software looks familiar, it has been updated to include Wizards and pre-defined activities. As soon as Philips sends us a review unit, we'll post an indepth with details including which WiFI/network devices it will work with and how battery life fares with the WiFi. My gut reaction is that its retail price of $1,299 is a bit too steep. But we'll reserve judgement until we see it in action. Availability in October.
