In order to enable cable companies to become compliant with the July 1 deadline for separable security access devices in all cable boxes, Motorola is updating the 6412 digital cable HDTV DVR. The new 6412 will include a single Multistream CableCARD Interface 2.0 card that can provide two-tuner support in a single card. Cable companies aren't required to replace existing boxes, however, new boxes after July 1 will require removable CableCARDs. Motorola will start shipping it this quarter. We think the new box looks a bit better. Now, if we could just get most of the cable providers using Motorola boxes to implement better software, perhaps we all would complain a lot less about the box. We believe a good example for others to follow will be the TiVo software implemented with TV Works software in the forthcoming Comcast TiVo.
