Oppo Digital has released the Oppo DV-981HD 1080p HD Up-Converting (upscaling) DVD player.
Built on the Oppo DV-970HD platform, the new DV-981HD (MSRP $229.99) includes capabilities from the highly touted OPDV971H such as the Genesis/Faroudja video chip, but adds 1080p support, HDMI out instead of DVI, and SACD support. The DVI-981HD also drops component video output, so if you're HD set doesn't have HDMI or DVI, you should consider one of the other models. Because it can be confusing and we know we'll be asked, below are general guidelines for buying an Oppo Digital DVD player: - If you have a 1080p HDTV with HDMI or DVI inputs, then you should get the DV-981HD. It will work fine with 720p or 1080i HDTVs as well – as long as you have DVI or HDMI inputs.
- If you have a very high quality video processor such as a DVDO iScan (which most people don't have), then you should consider the DV-970HD.
- Most other HDTV users will be very happy with the OPDV971H, although spending a few bucks extra for the new DV-981HD isn't a bad idea.
