Over the last 20 years, terrestrial radio has been dismantled to the point where it's represented by a few monolithic companies. If you care about Internet radio and don't want to see the same consolidation occur on the Internet, sign the petition at savethestreams.org.
Without a change in the latest royalty scheme lobbied for by the RIAA and forced through the Copyright Royalty Board on March 2nd, excellent services like Pandora will be forced to disappear. This ultimately limits your choice of music because only the artificially-created, over-hyped 'payola-supported' stars will get play time. When an artificial market limits exposure of small and upstart artists, it silences them by limiting their ability to make enough money to continue to create. So, if you want more Britney Spears, do nothing. If you want a rich, eclectic choice, sign the petition now. |

TiVo has always had fanatical customers. When you can grab a TiVo remote and instantly use it with neither instruction nor frustration, you win devotees. While TiVo has become ingrained in our culture, people tend to choose the path of least resistance and that path has always been satellite and cable-supplied boxes. I know plenty of people who use Motorola, Dish or Scientific Atlanta set-top DVRs still say they 'TiVo' their programs. Obviously, TiVo doesn't make any money on those users. When Vista comes out, there will be a new bona-fide TiVo Series 3 competitor with CableCARD-capable Vista Media Centers. TiVo will even become its own competitor by supplying Cox and Comcast with software for the cable company boxes. It's been an uphill battle and will continue to be an uphill battle for TiVo.
New TiVo pricing is confusing at best. Can TiVo survive their own business model? Read more for details.

They're the startup beginning to deliver wireless video and audio tools to the consumer electronics (CE) companies you know and love. I'm so tired of digital rights management (DRM). It gets in my way, limits where I can play my music, limits my choices and ultimately reduces how much music I'll buy. Bottom line -- if I had an iTunes or URGE-quality online option without DRM, I would buy more music than I do today and way more than I ever would on CD. I don't think I'm alone. The music studios shouldn't underestimate the impact of an easy impulse buy. Apple CEO Steve Jobs hasn't. I'm well aware that in a world without DRM people will steal music, however, those same people will steal music in a world with DRM. DRM on purchased digital downloads isn't slowing piracy down. What it's doing is confusing, limiting and frustrating customers and would-be customers. The goal of this post is not to espouse a DRM-free doctrine, but instead to show ways to break free from DRM music. Read more for details. |
